What is love?

Each one of us have different definitions, mentalities, ways to love another.

But are there  underlying guiding principles of love, or to love?

What does it truly mean to love completely, love wholesomely? What does it truly mean to love another?

The phone rang.

She was sobbing badly on the other end of the line.

“I’m going over,” I told her and hung up before she could protest.

1am. It was going to be a long night ahead..

She was still crying when she opened the door. She looked so broken, so vulnerable. I didn’t have to know what was wrong, I just held her in my arms. She cried even more.

“He broke up with me,” she finally said.

I just kept quiet as she let it all out.. questions, tears, anger, hurt.

“Why does love have to hurt so much?”

“No, love.. doesn’t hurt,” I said gently.

“So says the guy who’s been single forever? What would you know about love,” she jabbed.

“So says the guy who’s been your friend though Mr now-ex-#4,” I grinned. “Love doesn’t hurt you.. it’s the person that doesn’t know how to love or appreciate love that hurts you. But love never hurts,”.

“You won’t understand, Matt,” she sighed, “you’ve never been in love…”

“That’s not entirely true, you know..”

“Wait what- so who’s this girl I’ve never heard abou-“

“What did you love about #4 anyway?” I interjected.

“I don’t know… he is just perfect. And I love him so much,”

“But you don’t know what it is that you love about him?”

“It’s just.. the feeling when I’m with him. It always felt right with him. He made me feel loved and I loved him too,”

“That’s it? Just a feeling?”

“Well.. yea. What were you expecting me to say?”

“.. something more specific, maybe? I mean, if you thought he’s so ‘perfect’, why’d he still chea- erm, why’d he leave you?”

“Because I’m just not good enough for him? I don’t know..” she paused. “What is love to you then…”

“Hmm.. to me, being together or in love with someone should be more that just a feeling.. it should also be about mutual understanding, acceptance, respect, commitment and trust.”

“That’s what all couples would hope and want their relationship to be like, Matt. But expectations and reality don’t always go together..”

“Or maybe.. someone’s just not trying?”

“Well if you think love is so simple.. why haven’t you been with anyone all these years?”

“I never said love was simple.. but I guess the reason why I’ve never been with anyone yet is because.. I already know exactly what I want,”

“You have.. a checklist?”

“Sorta. It’s not the typical kinda ‘I’d like a girl with long hair, nice smile, etc’ superficial checklist though,”

“Oh. What kind of list is it then?”

“It’s like.. a concept of love. Of what it is about a girl that will make me fall completely in love with her. A concept that has more than three specific reasons that would answer any question as to why I love her.”

“You have a concept of love?” she laughed. “Love isn’t a theory, Matt.. you can’t just classify love by a concept or definition, you simply feel it with your heart..”

“But you see.. the reason why I think there are so many broken hearts, is because people merely jump into a relationship when their heart feels a certain something towards someone. But I don’t think that’s love, that’s merely an infatuation. Personally, I believe there are more than three reasons and aspects that actually determines whether we really are truly in love beyond the superficial ‘I don’t know why I love him/her.. I just do’ reason,”

“That makes sense. So what exactly is this.. ‘concept’ of yours about?” she asked, genuine curiosity replacing her initial skepticism.

“I call it the 4+1 theory. The aspects that will determine if it’s true love or just a fickle infatuation. It’s based on this idea that whenever we like someone, if we really go deeper into what is it that draws us to him or her, we’d be able to find that one specific reason. That’s not love though. That’s merely an attraction or infatuation. But when more than three of the aspects from this theory are present, you’ll be pretty sure that it’s more than just a feeling. For me personally, this determines if I’ll ever fall in love with a girl…”

Mind. Heart. Body. Soul.

The mind aspect, to put it simply, is her intellect. But I don’t mean the academic smarts.. it’s the way she thinks, processes and analyzes things way beyond a shallow self centeredness. It’s the way she puts across her thoughts, not for winning an argument’s sake, but to really try to understand or even sensibly debate opposing views that might leave anyone reflecting on her words or challenge me to think differently. It’s the way she carries herself off with an aura of sophistication and enigmatic charm and no matter how much I might think I already know her or have her figured out, she’ll still surprise me with something unexpected. Good surprise. I like intellect. Personally, it takes a little more to intrigue me and stimulate my senses. If I can connect with someone and talk endlessly about the concept of nothing, then, only then, will we be able to talk about everything else.. and I think that’s incredibly alluring,”

“Ooh.. so my best friend’s sapiosexual too,” she teased. “But what about her likes and dislikes or like her personality.. does that go under the mind aspect too?”

“Well, that’s where the heart aspect comes in. The heart represents who she is by what she values or cares about. The things she likes, the things she dislikes. What really matters to her, as well as her insecurities and fears..”

She bit her lower lip - thinking. “But what if him knowing about my past and all my insecurities scares him or drives him away? Or what if he ever uses all of these against me if someday things go bad between us?”

“Erm.. you do realize that it doesn’t really matter now because whether or not he ever knew, he already chose to leave you right? But.. if he still or ever tries to hurt you in any way, then he is a fucking bastard and I will punch his face,”. I really meant it.

“I don’t think he even cares about me anymore,” she sighed, “maybe he never really did.. we were so.. different. I don’t know why I never actually realize it before,”

“Maybe because then, you were too ‘blinded by love’ to see, or you chose to conveniently ignore the differences. Honestly though, I think it’s critical for two people to understand each other’s heart and learn to accommodate each other’s differences rather than simply turning a blind eye or deaf ear ‘because I love him and that’s all that matters’. Because if two people are too different in the way they think, behave or live.. I reckon it will become a huge problem when the infatuation bubble bursts.”

“I don’t really understand..” she said.

“Let me just ask you this.. does he know how passionate you are towards the arts and music?"

“Well, no.. not really. He’s more the sports kind of guy and doesn’t like theatre and stuff so I didn’t want him to get bored if I talked to him about things he isn’t interested in..”

“Then i’m guessing he probably also doesn’t care or know the little things about you. Like how you’re afraid of the dark and why you’re actually scared of darkness.. how family and relationships are really important to you.. that ice cream is your happy pill. You know, I’m even going to bet that he doesn’t know you go to bed every night, clutching your phone just hoping and waiting for him to text you goodnight..”

She started to tear again, but I continued..

“You see, it’s not a matter of whether it bores him or not.. it’s a matter of whether he bothers or not. I mean, if he doesn’t even know these things about you, then he really doesn’t know you at all. How then can he say he loves you?”

“But I really loved him,” she murmured softly to herself .

“I know you did. I know you still do and it’s hurting you like shit. But you need to know that for any kind of relationship to work.. two people need to give and take. Sadly, with him, it seems like you’re the one who was always giving. If he actually really loved you back as much, he’d make a greater effort to close the gap and bridge the differences between you two. He’d want to hear what you have to say, he would actually consider your opinions, your needs and your feelings. He’ll not just tell you or text you that he loves you.. he’ll show it by the things he will do or be willing to do no matter how inconvenient or silly it might be, just because.. he knows it’ll make you happier or better. To me, when it comes to a relationship, the heart aspect isn’t just a feeling or who you/he or she is anymore. It becomes two hearts beating as one. Two people wanting to understand each other.. sharing the good, the bad and possibly a future together; actually bothering and supporting each other’s feelings, values, dreams, thoughts, emotions,”

She stayed silent for a long while before she looked up, holding my gaze.. there was this unspoken tension building before she finally spoke again.

“But.. what if something that’s important to me, is not something the guy might feel same way about?"

“Then I’ll try-” I caught myself. “I mean, if I were him. I’d try. I’d make the effort.. because it’s important to you and you’re important to me,”

She remained silent again. She wasn’t crying anymore but this time, the prolonged silence was starting to grow even more deafening.

“Matt,” she finally spoke - softly, “do you believe in love at first sight?”

“No.” I said flatly.

“Oh..” she sighed. “You know what you said about mind and heart.. it’s actually starting to sink in and I’m beginning to realize that maybe these two aspects weren’t exactly a big part of my relationship with him,”

“So what made you fall in love with him then?”

“Well.. don’t laugh, but I’ve always thought that with him, it was love at first sight. I mean, there was just this spark between us from the very first time we met,”

“Cos he was hot?” I scoffed.

“No.. don’t be an idiot,” she tried to hide her smile but failed. I rolled my eyes. “Okay fine, yea maybe that. But it wasn’t the only reason!”

I raised an eyebrow.

“He was really nice too! And he was always sweet to me,“ she began her defense case. “He always made me feel happy, secure and loved without even having to try, you know?” I just continued staring at her waiting for her to go on. “Oh never mind, you’d never understand..”

“Actually.. I do. And I think I now understand what it was that made you fall in love with him.

The body aspect.

The body aspect is about physical attraction, intimacy and presence.

I don’t believe in love at first sight. I don’t believe you can just “instantly know” you’re in love or that someone’s THE one just by “first sight”. No offense, but I think the whole love at first sight concept is bullshit that only exists in movies and fairy tales. In reality, it isn’t love. That very first attraction.. is probably lust. Lust at first sight”.

“What nonsense! It’s not like I was lusting over him from the very first time I laid eyes on him! Maybe it’s the case for guys.. I mean, sex is always on a guy’s mind whenever he meets a girl right? But it’s different for girls, Matt..” she protested.

“Okay. You know what.. since you brought up the age-old guys and sex debate, I’ll tell you this secret to clarify something about guys for the first and last time.. probably 99% of guys are naturally sexual. If you ever meet any guy who tells you he isn’t sexual at all, it’s not that he’s gay – no, gays are even more horny .. he’s likely to be a liar and you should be more wary of him. BUT! Here’s the thing.. even though guys are sexual by nature, it isn’t always the only or most important thing to a guy,”

“Really?” now she raised her eyebrow with that annoying smirk on her face.

“Oh come on, you girls know how it is, plus you aren’t exactly saint-like innocent either.. sometimes you see a hot guy and you start fantasizing or making statements like ‘omg have my babies’..”

“That…” she started blushing.

“That.. is exactly my point. It’s the same with guys. We might talk and think about sex a lot more openly than girls but it isn’t always the only thing on our mind. When I said it’s lust at first sight.. I didn’t literally mean you want the guy naked and in bed. What I meant is the momentary attraction or desire– he might be hot, he might be charming, he might have smiled at you that made you feel a certain way.. but that’s not love. That’s really just a superficial physical attraction. Saying “I’m in love” right there and then just completely takes the special meaning out of the word ‘love’. If you ask me, I personally think the process of loving or falling in love with someone involves discovering the person and then perhaps developing feelings. It could happen quickly or over a longer period of time, but not at first sight,”

“Hmm.. that does make sense,” she paused and then her lips curled up forming that annoying smirk again. “Oh wow, this is the first time you and I are talking about sex huh..”.

“You never asked..”

“Tell me then.. what is sex to you?”

“Sex.. to me, is merely a physical act. I am not part of the whole “sex is sacred/taboo” camp but then, I don’t take sides with the whole bed hopping culture either,”

“I can’t believe you just said that sex is merely a physical act..” she began in a disappointed tone.

“But sex really is just a physical act if it’s without emotions or feelings. And that is why I distinguish between sex and making love, the same way I clearly differentiate ‘loving’ and ‘being in love’ with someone,”

“Oh.” this time, she smiled. She understood.

“Don’t get me wrong.. I think physical intimacy is very important in a relationship but for me, the one physical aspect that matters the most.. is the physical presence. That, is also what I reckon made you fall in love with him.

“Okay this, I really want to know…” she said.

“The physical presence is simply being there. You want him to be with you. You want to be there for him. Because just being there with or for each other makes your day, or you as a person, a little better. You may act or behave a little different when you’re with him, but in a good way – in a way that you actually feel completely comfortable, safe and you. Perhaps even without you knowing, you smile more and laugh harder. You feel real, genuine joy. And even on days when the smile can’t happen, you know you don’t have to pretend to be okay or be self conscious in front of him; because its perfectly okay to be the way you are and feel when you’re with him. He cares about you and you feel loved when you’re with him. Sometimes, there are no need for words or explanations.. just his presence, him being there for you, holding you.. makes you feel better or believe that it’s going to be okay again. Because you’re not just holding on to someone for attention or sympathy.. you actually feel and believe that you’re holding on to a part of or the rest of your life..”

Which leads to the fourth aspect – soul.

The soul aspect to me, is the deepest form and the final affirmation that should answer any remaining doubt or questions as to whether we’ve truly fallen in love with a person.

It’s when you start noticing but still appreciate all the other little things, even the flaws - especially the flaws. It’s when you truly know a person stripped down of all their walls, exposed to their soul and yet still accept and love him or her. It’s a level of understanding and acceptance that goes beyond the “honeymoon everything is perfect” period.

It’s when you finally realize this one person is someone you can always and want to tell everything to, and you want to ask and know everything of him or her as well. It’s when you actually want to share your life and trust your secrets with this person; and you can. This someone is the first person you think of when you’re happy, sad or when something significant happens. This same person is someone you can call at 1am in the morning and they’d drop everything to make time for you, staying by you till the sun rises or you’re better again - as you would for him or her as well. This person cares and will listen. Will really listen, giving you their undivided attention and genuine love; not necessarily every time but any time you need him or her. This one person makes your problem their problem and they go through it together with you just so you don’t have to go through the pain and tears alone,”

It was at this moment, for the very first time, she looked at me in a different way but said nothing.

“You see, the soul aspect..” I continued, “is when you start to see and want to share the rest of your life with this one other. And not in a clingy “I can’t live without you” way, but in a way that I can still live my life without you as I have before I met you, but now that you’ve come to exist in my life, I see the possibility of a life with you and now I actually want to make decisions and live a life, continuing to create more moments and memories together with you”.

“Well.. so.. have you met this one person yet? I mean, I’m sure it’s almost impossible to find that ‘perfect’ girl who fulfills all of your four aspects of love right?” she mumbled. I could barely hear her. She wasn’t even looking at me anymore.

“No, it is not impossible and I don’t think its asking for too much. You see the thing about these four aspects is, we often and will find one or two aspects in many different people. And that alone may be enough to make us attracted to them or develop a crush on them. But really, that is not love at all. If we like a person because “he’s cute” or “the way she thinks”, that’s just us liking the body and/or mind aspect of a person. The reality is, we are always going to meet many people who possess these different aspects of mind, heart, body or soul. But on a rare occasion when you do meet someone who possess all these four aspects.. you’ll almost definitely know that he or she is not one of many but may just be the one. So personally, I won’t settle for anything less unless she possess more than three qualities. You know people write the symbol of love as < 3 (less than three), I actually think love should be more than three.. I define it as 4+1. “

“So what’s plus one?” she asked, still not looking at me.

“Plus one…” I trailed off – unconsciously.

“Matt?” she placed her hand on top of mine, finally looking me in eye again.

“Plus one.. is something only the one who's meant to be will ever know and hold the answer to”.

end.

Update on 3rd March 2013:

Hello to you who might be reading/following this.. thank you for reading and your patience as I wrote this story.

This is actually my experimentation to a different style of writing but in a way, it was also a reflection of reality and a confession of sorts.

For those of you who can relate or like this way of writing, I thank you for your time, comments, thumbs up and sharing. I do appreciate it. It actually kept me writing when I wanted to abandon the story.

So thank you, sincerely.

Perhaps I will write something of similar nature again someday; if you'd like to read my future writing, you can follow me if you want to and when I do.

Contentment. (Lessons from Dota 2 trading)

Contentment is probably the single most important thing in life. It will give you the reason to smile, the reason to give, the reason to love and be loved. It will teach you that life is not just about chasing, getting and always wanting some more.

But don't get me wrong. Contentment does not imply the spirit of make-do, for the simple reason that make-do suggest that you are settling for something less, and that, in itself, is not contentment. You can go on living with the same things, but you will want more, and you will never be happy. You are just an opportunist waiting to strike, an epitome of greed.

Neither does contentment equate to stagnation. It does not mean that you stop move forward because you have what you need to have. Contentment merely implies that you set a goal, move forward and achieve it, give yourself a pat on your back, a reason to smile, and a break to relax. And you set another goal. Another informed goal - One that you can quantify, one that you will know when you achieve it. Most importantly, one that will grant you the satisfaction of fulfilment when you achieve it.

So, what exactly is contentment? How will you be contented?

To answer this, we have to question, ourselves. What do we want? It is easy to be an idealist and claim that you want a of CAP 5.0, to have a nice car, to live in a nice house, to find the love of your life and settle down, and so on. But wait. Think again. Is this really what you want?

Take for example, if you chase a CAP of 5.0, you will start to frown upon the guy across the class actively participating in the tutorial. "He's just trying to get more class participation marks." And you won't be happy. You will constantly bother yourself with scoring higher, doing better than your counterparts. You will think of ways to push yourself up, or pull the others down. You will be sceptical about every single thing your classmates do, and you will try to outwit them in every possible way.

Alternatively, if you view your experience in school to be a process of learning, a process of knowledge acquisition, things will be different. The guy across the class questions the mental models of the issue, builds exposure about the example and clarifies the definition of topic. The other guy in class, now, is helping you to learn; to become a more knowledgeable person. Your lectures will now be bits and pieces of additional information to aid you in your process of knowledge acquisition. And you will go to school happy, for you know that you are becoming a wiser person, a more knowledgeable person each day.

So, ask yourself, just what exactly do you want in a year's time, in five years' time, in ten years' time, at the end of your life. Because it is impossible to be contended if you, yourself, are not sure of what you want. You will be lost, not much different from the people you often criticize.

To never stop chasing is one of the important thing in life, but to chase blindly is one of the most foolish crime you can commit.

To my fellow defenders of our country.

Another Singapore girl sneers at NSmen: Go and protest outside Istana if you do not want to serve NS!

I refer to the aforementioned article, and to the countless number of similar articles.

There will be people like those in the article who will take flight when(or before) war breaks out; There will be people who value their skin more than their identity. But our army is prepared for the real thing - To be operationally ready when war breaks out. For this simple reason, our army have 'fats'(put simply, more than one reservist man to one soldier ratio) in our active reservist units - To cater for the aforementioned people, and yet still be ready for the real action.

Now, my message is simple. You get a choice, a simple choice - Are you going away, or are you staying? Whichever your choice, we would still operational, and more than ready for the real thing.

However, it is this choice that defines who we are, who we all are as Singaporeans.

Now to those who will stay, I salute you, for the simple reason that we managed to look past sheer individualism, deeper into the foundations of communal living - Because I exist, they exist, and vice versa.

Now, don't expect others to understand our choice(I would very much love to bold this), because we can never rationalize the intangibles. Watch them leave, but do not be disheartened, remember the reason why we stayed - For the people fighting alongside us, for the people whom we are protecting. It is also worthwhile to note that just because the fiasco is built around the flyers does not mean that they represent the majority. You would be amazed by the number of people who would stay and fight alongside you. Stay strong, I wish you all the best.

And to those who will take flight, I wish you all the best too.

Playing the game of politics.

This is funny. Well, you cannot fault them for saying things like smaller flats do not necessarily mean lower quality of living, or that $1,000 income is enough to buy a flat. What we can fault them is probably for giving an extreme POV, as will be discussed.

1) $1,000 is enough to buy a flat, based on the given calculations. But what was not taken into account is probably the fact that you would probably have to survive on plain white rice and no mobile phones, basic necessities for the period that you have to pay the loan.

2) I guess this is just playing with words. Quality of life need not stem from material affluence. However, given a choice, all things same, would you rather a larger flat, or a smaller? Of course, you will be happier(higher quality of life) if you can get whichever you want.

3) I don't know why he made that statement. I really do look forward to the day when my education is literally free.

4) 50% of Singaporeans don't pay income taxes at all. I guess that is the problem, and I don't see how this is a defence. You see, Singapore employs a progressive income tax bracket system. The fact that 50% of Singaporeans do not pay income tax really speaks volume, already.

You don't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, neither do you judge a bird by its ability to swim.

Tell me, henceforth, why do you judge yourself by the scales of what others set for you?
I guess everyone, at least once in your lifetime, have pondered upon the question of what makes a true friend. Who matters to you?

To me, the answer is simple.

If the other person try harder to make you happy than you yourself try to, a friend he is.
Similarly, if you try harder to put happiness in someone else's life than your own, that someoneis your friend.

That said, friendship works both ways. Like relationships, one-sided friendship won't work.

It's time to think about who your true friends are, and let go of those who are not.

What is your definition of a friend?

Steve Jobs - Great, or not?

I'm sharing it not because I agree with it, but I like the author because he's critical. Nonetheless, critical does not suggest that he is right.

Comparing Jobs to a morally great man is not a fair comparison. After all, do we recognize Jobs to be a morally great man? No.(Not morally great does not equate to immoral.)

What we recognize Jobs for was for the fact that he revolutionized our cell phone technology; his ingenuity and ability to incorporate our daily necessities into a phone.

Saying that any other man could have done what he did is plain ridiculous. We are living in the age where by information is spread by the seconds; What matters more is not the ability to deliver(or replicate, oh Microsoft) the product, but the ability to generate the idea that leads to the initial formation of the product.

While it is not fair to say that the technology would never be invented without Jobs, it wouldn't be fair either to say that any other would have invented the same technology(at a similar time) without him.

You are right in saying that Jobs wasn't great in the sense that he placed heavy emphasis on philanthropic work, but you might want to consider other aspects of being great. He was great because he delivered a hell lot of convenience in our lives - He gave us what we wanted. (I am not even going into the argument of the time saved from the integration of technology, and what these savings translate into.)

Einstein was a great scientist, Plato was a great philosopher, Michael Jordan was a great basketballer, Mother Theresa was a great humanitarian, and the list goes on. Maybe we ought to reconsider what we define being great to be.

So, Mr. author, before you start saying that Jobs ain't as great as we perceive him to be, please know why we actually consider him to be great in the first place - Not his morals, but his brilliance and hence our convenience. A fair judgement please.

Science?

If light cannot pass through opaque objects, and neutrinos are able to, does it not suggest that neutrinos have a mass small than light, and assuming that both light and neutrinos are particles, or waves if we have a primary assumption that particles cannot travel through object.

For 'floorball rox'

On the tagboard, 'floorball rox' requested for a post discussing about where to draw the line between using your heart and using your head. Of course, my generic answer is cliché - It will have to depend on the context, employ the right one for the right situation.  I shall explain myself in a few context, hoping that one of it is what you are looking for.

First up, the most common topic whereby people are faced with this dilemma - Love.

My stance for this is to use your heart. For the simple reason that you don't think love, you feel love. But some will ask, if you were to follow your heart in love, then what is the right way of loving someone?

Lucky for all of us, we are homo sapiens. We have innate primal instincts, and highest priority in the list is survivability. Part of survivability is to reproduce, and part of reproduction is mating, and we all know that there is one important thing in mating - Attracting your mate; impressing the opposite sex.

You see, this ability of how to love is innate. There is no need for another to teach you, just as a baby Komodo Dragon knows that it have to climb up a tree the moment it is born to prevent being preyed upon - It is a primal instinct. But sometimes, why we find it so difficult to love is simply because we have been taught to suppress our primal instinct.

For example, a part of survivability is communal living, but some of our parents taught us to be wary of your friends, that there is no free lunch in this world, that everyone cares more about themselves before you. Like communal living, some of us managed to make ourselves believe that love hurts; it's not worth a try. If you happen to be in any of the categories mentioned above, or any along the line, you might find it hard to re-discover your natural ability to love.

But so long as you are willing to allow yourself to live again, to follow your heart, how to love will come to you, naturally.

And a piece of advice from me to you is not to hide in your comfort zone of not loving in fear of getting hurt, because love is divine.

Next up, spirituality. For the simple reason that spirituality is something you you personally believe in, and yet is unable to rationalize, you have to use your heart. Enlightenment, which I think is the best thing spirituality can offer you, is felt, not taught. You don't go about saying, "Teach me how to attain Zen?". Instead, you ask yourself, "How do I attain Zen." Zen is a self-discovery, a personal mastery. In spirituality, teachings are only able to teach you that much. In my opinion, teachings only make up 20% of why spirituality is awesome. The other 80% that is most wonderful about spirituality is discovering yourself. Enlightenment, and change, comes from the inside. Knowing yourself, recognizing your flaws, and strengths too, suggest that you are halfway on the route to enlightenment, to changing for what you perceive is better.

For most of the other things, follow your head.

In short, if it is about spiritual, primal instinct(communal living, survivability, etc), love, etc, use your heart. If not, use your head.

This writing sucks bad. No rigour, no emphasis, no personal touch. Seems to me like blatant ranting.

More Life Lessons.

These are some of life's many important lesson that I have came to discover recently. I believe it would be beneficial for you to know. These may not be of much value to you now, but rest assured that it would be in the future.

1. Every action can be perceived differently by different group of people. To an individual, it may mean one thing; to a group/organization, it may mean another; to the social media, it might just mean the opposite.

2. Just because one is smart doesn't make him/her necessarily wise.

3. Give others the benefit of doubt that they are trustworthy, and more often than not, they would not fail to impress you.

Help!

Hey all! I need some help with a dilemma.

If a guy were to use profanities on you, and expects a favor from you some ten minutes later, what would you do?

Quoted from one of my readers:

"If I am still affected- I'll say NO! and walk away.

If I want to be gracious- still help, and tell the person that I do "

Now, if you have to make a choice, which will it be?

Liberal views on LOVE

As stated, my views on love are extremely liberal; I think it's perfectly fine for couples not to get married. And I shall attempt to justify that. (I will be using me and you, because it is so much easier to express myself rather than in terms of Person #1 and Person #2)

Note: Whatever I refer to as 'marriage' could also be interpreted as 'a relationship'. Tweak the grammar a little, but the idea is similar.

A disclaimer before I begin - By no means am I saying that marriage is a bad thing. My views on this is akin that on religion. If it makes you a better person, do it. But if it doesn't, or makes you worse, then it is time to question why we subscribe to them.

Before I begin, allow me to show you our generic social behaviour, in an attempt to broaden your perspective. Too often, we are taught to use our mind and not follow our heart. This is significantly evident in our society, as 'nurtured' by our education system - There is no/little passion in what we do. And as I always say, "When there is no cause, there is no case."

This brings me to the point - You don't think love, you feel it. Not knowing love doesn't make you any less of a lover, and knowing it doesn't make you any more of one too. Feel with your heart, not your mind. There is just so much our mind can do; Love can never be rationalized, simply because there is only one person that is the subject of our love. It is UNIQUE. Below are two clichés that might help you understand what I'm trying to put across.

"Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder."
There is no one most beautiful person in the world. The ugliest person to one may seem to be the most beautiful to another. Likewise, the most beautiful person to one may seem to be the ugliest to another.

"One's meat, another man's poison."
What you may find appeasing might seem to be the most irritable to another. And vice versa.

In a nutshell, love is unique. Don't try to understand love, for the beauty of love is the mystery of it. Your mind will never understand what your heart tells you, and your heart will never understand what your mind tells you. Feel it.

Now for the main part.

If marriage is going to make me love you less each day, then I would rather not be married, and live under the fear that I may lose you each day, so that I would cherish you every single moment of my life. The hard truth about this is that when we 'possess' our other half, we will start to take things for granted, simply because we lose the fear of losing them - We become complacent.

If marriage is going to make you feel that you shouldn't leave me because you feel 'bad', even though you don't love me any more, then I would rather you be able to leave me and pursue your happiness. After all, does loving someone require you to possess them? Personally, I don't think so. Put on the extreme, possessing them may even be akin to holding them captive; Making them doing something against their will.

If not getting married means that I won't take you for granted, I don't see any reason to get married. Marriage is merely a social construct, whereby a man is officially the spouse of a woman, and vice versa. And I would like to question, who are you trying to prove your relationship to? Look. You are not accountable to anyone about your relationship other than your partner - The person you are engaged in a relationship with. So, does it really matter so much whether or not you are married or engaged? Shouldn't what really matter be the love that co-exist, the mutual appreciation of the two?

I must question once again, as I always do - Are we too engrossed in the tangibles, that we fail to see that we have neglect the intangible aspects, even in the case of an intangible? In short, why are we trying to make tangible the intangibles? Have we lost the intangibles in our bid to make them tangible?

There is no measurement for love. Love is a feeling. If you feel it, you feel it. You might be able to say otherwise, but your heart cannot lie. Having a certificate for 'love' doesn't make you love another any more than you did, and not having one doesn't make you love another any less.

If you truly love someone, it seems amazingly easy to be appeased by the person. But when you start to take someone for granted, you seem to be irritated by every action of theirs. When these signs start to show themselves, it's time to question yourselves - Have I set the bar too high such that it becomes unachievable? Did their 'good' things all seem so mundane to me because I have been too used to their 'good' things? Does me getting used to their 'good' things make their 'good' things any less 'good'?

But you must also ask yourselves, "Does he really love me less now than before?"

Many say that love is painful, and with it comes suffering. I do agree; It's not always a smooth and straight road. But when you suffer more than you enjoy in the relationship, maybe what you are feeling isn't love, but a sense of attachment; an unwillingness to change. And mark my words, everyday that you remain engaged in this unwillingness/attachment, life/love is going to be painful. Maybe even more than you could even imagine.

Whether we love someone or not is not determined by a piece of paper, and it is definitely not determined by what you say. 'Saying I Love You' might sound sweet, but it really is negligible when you compare it with 'Showing I Love You'.

In a few words to sum up all I have said:

Love is all about how you feel.

And once again,

It would be better if we don't fall in love at all, if we cannot fall so hopelessly in love that we cannot get ourselves out of it.

On a side note, I actually do have so much more that I wanted to type. But as always, I lose all inspiration whenever you put me in front of a computer, all ready to pen down my thoughts. Guess I'll never be a great writer. Enjoy. I may edit when those thoughts resurface on my mind.

Great Man vs Good Man

What constitutes a great man, and a good man?

To me, a great man and a good man ain't really that different. In term of competitiveness, there are more or less equal. But a great man is one who is ALWAYS improving, whereas a good man is already at his peak. A great man listens to feedbacks and reflect upon his actions, but a good man turns a deaf ear to what others say.

Everyone was born to do great things, but some greater than others. So, how do you become 'greater'?

Remember, life is a journey. The race ain't finished till you cross the finishing line. And so often, what we perceived as the end is but a start. And in this era, knowledge is power.

Are you a great man, or a good man?

There are infinitely many perspectives to the question "What constitutes a great man, and a good man." Mine is but one of them. Do share your perspectives!

English spelling vs auto-correct.

In view of the integration of technology into most of our everyday life, the requirement for a strong ability to spell words accurately greatly diminishes, as one can always rely on the 'auto-correct' function.

Previously, people used to undergo rigorous spelling tests to ensure that they are able to spell a word correctly, such that they would be understood by their reader. However, in our current society, so long as one is able to produce a word that is similar to the actual word, he will most probably be able to use the 'auto-correct' function to obtain the right spelling. Therefore, he/she will be able to write as well as someone our age, who have mastered our 'spelling' tests.

Now, this is a question question I would like all readers to ponder upon:

Should we reduce the importance of 'spelling' because of the change in our technological landscape?

Definitely, every individual have a different take on this. Let us know your take, and why.

blogger: in addition, many biological terms is not recognised by auto-correct function. So spelling is stil important to produce a good written report as well as for some specialised areas.

blogger: auto-correction should not undermine the importance of good spelling. It is as good as saying mental sum is less important because we have a calculator. Technology is just a tool to help us.

A worthy perspective shared by 'blogger'. He/She highlights that the 'auto-correct' function is a tool for generic English use, and that it would not be as useful in specialized fields. Hence, there is a limitation for the usefulness of the 'auto-correct' function.
Also, I am guessing that he/she implies that the discussed function should be a tool to tackle our carelessness, rather than something that we rely on.

Losing a good for the better?

George Yeo conference on 10th May, 3days after GE 2011.

Now I understand why people say call him a good minister.

But then again, would the loss to Parliament is greater if PAP have won? Is this a case of losing something good for something better? That is the question we will find out in the next five years.

Personally, I'll be hoping for more rationalized policies. What are you looking for?

Post-GE 2011

GE 2011 is over. Maybe we should all move beyond 'Remove Tin Pei Ling from Parliament' and 'reinstate George Yeo as MFA'. PM Lee has explicitly said that there would be no by-elections even if George Yeo loses Aljunied GRC, and I believe he really don't care if TPL is in MP GRC. There are matters of larger national interest for him to attend to.

Go back to your original life and stop asking what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

Anyway, I just spoke to one of my colleagues who holds the position of Assistant Director in my office. He has been a Singaporean PR for over 20 years. He highlighted a problem that most countries were facing in the 1990s, and it kind of enlightened me. According to him, it was termed as the 'brain drain' problem. You can look up Wikipedia.

In early 1990s, not only in Singapore, but all parts of the world, skilled workers and managers were looking for jobs outside of their own country. (The grass is greener on the other side, and hearsay plays a large part of information transfer.) In face of this problem, Singapore attempted to attract foreign talent to make up for the loss in their own talents, hence they implemented policies which gives foreigners an 'unfair advantage' and an incentive to settle down in Singapore.

See, these policies did have its merits. However, removal of an active policy is not as easy as implementing it. This is evident in the 'welfare state' in Britain, where government intervention led to an over-reliance on the government. Hence, when the government realized that the system was being abused, it was already too late to restore things to their original state.

In Singapore, I guess the problem did not start with our current leaders. You may call it a 'lack of foresight', but I would like you to ponder on whether we would be as prosperous as we are today, if not for those policies. Maybe somewhere in between, we forgot to change with the times. But maybe, we are too engrossed in what happens within our country, that we undermined the effects of a 'global competition'. Foreign talent influx might, in fact, be one of the policies that we need right now, in order to survive and remain competitive in the future. We may just not be seeing it now.

Of course, all these are discussed purely in an economic POV.

Please feel free to share your opinion. (:

An Intelligent Person

What do you think constitutes an intelligent person?

You may highlight any attributes, or trends or habits that you think they possess.

Personally, I think they have to be really curious, always wanting to find out more. And they are extremely skeptical about things they are told - They never take anything at face-value. They think from another perspective, and they think ahead of others. Academic credentials are definitely not a good indicator for intelligence.

And I think they sleep much less than normal people! Simply because they use this time to think about the many things they don't have an answer to.

It's kind of like a cycle. The more you think, the smarter you get. The smarter you get, the more you think.

What do you think?
