There is a cycling route that I frequent, and it is no easy feat, even till now.
Today I tried to run that route. And lucky for me, I took $50 for emergency cash, instead of the usual $10.
Yes, you would have guessed, I did not finish the to and fro run. I could find a thousand and one excuse to why I did not finish, e.g. The new pair of tights that is too tight, insufficient energy and mineral salt, inability to locate water points to fill my bottle, recurring knee injury, and the list might never end. But the bottom line remains.
There are much greater lessons to learn from, other than the fact that I DNF. I discovered how much I am able to push my body without it crumbling; I learnt the power of 'mind over body', at least until your body says no; but most importantly, I re-discovered both my mental and physical limits.
Today, the price to pay was high, at least, monetary wise. But the lesson I drew from the failure is worth much more. I learn that each time I challenge my limits, I will always come back stronger. And this is a great thing. A great, great thing.
So, if anything, today's failure have just strengthened my resolve to not only complete the run in the future, but do even more than that, much more than that. It might have shown me how weak and incompetent I am now, but it also showed me the path to how to become great sportsman.
So whoever is reading this, mark my words.
I. Will. Come. Back. Stronger.
Much. Stronger.
